He did much to develop co-operation with schools, including school visits and library lessons, and was also an antiquary of distinction and President of the Islington Antiquarian Society. He had acted as consulting librarian to Dartford when that authority was initiating service in 1913 and returned from retirement as Acting Chief from 1942 to 1945.
